(Bloomberg) -- Turkey is getting a giant helper to avoid last December’s gas shortages.

The world’s biggest specialized vessel to import liquefied natural gas, a cheaper and quicker solution than a land-based facility, is on its way to help with imports of the fuel mainly used for heating and power generation. The MOL FSRU Challenger, as long as the Eiffel Tower, is expected to arrive from South Korea this month and start by year-end.

Last winter, a cold snap gripped the whole region, including Iran, where Turkey gets some of its gas from. That meant the nation couldn’t get hold of enough fuel to meet its booming gas demand and the grid asked private power plants to reduce fuel demand by as much as 90 percent.

A first floating storage and regasification unit, the Neptune, arrived in December to complement two onshore terminals at Aliaga and Marmara Ereglisi.

Turkey’s gas consumption is rising fast and sharp seasonal demand swings and limited storage mean supply is tight over winter. Deploying FSRUs offers a solution to Turkey’s problems.

The Turkish gas market has grown over the last 10 years from 27bcm in 2005 to 48bcm in 2016. About 70 per cent of this demand growth has come from increased gas use in power and industry, reflecting the last decade’s robust economic growth and a 30 per cent hike in winter heating demand in the residential and commercial sector.

Engie to build gas, electricity trading platform - DAILY SABAH

The Global Energy Management (GEM) division of France's Engie, a multinational electric utility company, has revealed plans to establish a gas and electricity trading platform in Istanbul, through a written statement on Dec. 29.

The written statement read, "We have been rendering service in Turkey for more than 40 years. Neptune, one of Engie Group's Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Storage and Gasification (FSRU) terminals, started to operate in İzmir's Etki LNG terminal as the first FSRU terminal in Turkey last week. Engie continues to actualize natural gas supply projects in line with the needs of the Turkish market."

Turkey saw the inauguration of its first floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal last Friday.

The facility includes a jetty and onshore natural gas pipeline connecting regasified LNG from the unit to the neighboring pipeline grid. According to developer ENGIE and its Turkish construction partners, project development took 6.5 months from final investment decision to completion.

The ETKI LNG terminal was built by construction companies Kolin and Kalyon of Turkey. The facility is at Aliaga on the Aegean coast.

Turkey extends gas cuts to power plants - ARGUS

London, 20 December (Argus) — Turkish gas grid operator Botas has instructed state-run and independent gas-fired power plants to limit their contractual gas use further to just 25pc as of tomorrow at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Botas had instructed private power plants to halve their gas use as of 14 December, while the state-run Euas and Tetas plants have halved their gas consumption since 24 November, following a drop in Iranian gas flows into Turkey on 22 November.

Gas burn for power fell to 19.8mn m³/d on 14-18 December — or just 10.2pc of total gas use — from 36.2mn m³/d – or 18.8pc of the total — earlier in the month, energy ministry data show.

Turkish traders braced for gas crisis amid fears over LNG supplies - ICIS

Turkish power and gas traders were braced for one of the country’s ‘worst energy crisis’, amid fears of supply shortages and soaring demand in the upcoming week.

Companies have raised concerns about a pending shortage of LNG volumes over the next seven days at a time of cold weather-driven spiking demand, uncertain pipeline imports and reduced hydro production.

“This is the biggest energy crisis of Turkey and it appears that next week [the gas transmission system operator and incumbent] BOTAS won’t be able to meet demand even with gas curtailments,” a power trader told ICIS on Friday.

Expected to contribute more than 5 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas to Turkey's annual gas supply, the GDF Suez Neptune plant, Turkey's first Floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) Storage Regasification Unit (FRSU), has started conducting test studies inİzmir's Aliağa district. In a period of only six months unit will be able to transfer the capacity, which is usually activated in four years, to Turkey's national gas supply. This is possible since it operates from the water.

GDF Suez Neptune FSRU

The GDF Suez Neptune plant, which is Turkey's first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant which also contains a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FRSU), has reached the coasts of the Aegean province Izmir.

The floating plant left France last week and docked at a port in Izmir, which is especially designed for the plant, on Sunday.

The GDF Suez Neptune is to be put into use by Kolin Group in Izmir's district Aliağa within this month.

With a capacity of 5.3 million tons, it is expected to contribute 20 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to Turkey's gas supply, thus considerably increasing the country's supply capacity on a daily basis.
