In the wake of the ongoing economic reform programme adopted by the authorities and the plans to transform Egypt into a major energy hub, Daily News Egypt sat with Gasser Hanter, Vice President Upstream, Country Chair & Managing Director of Shell Egypt, which is responsible for around 20% of Egypt’s gas production and 10% of the country’s oil production to discuss the prospects of Egypt’s oil and gas sector, in addition to reviewing the company’s latest projects and updates in the Egyptian market.

Shell won exploration rights in the North Um Baraka concession in the Western Desert, Oil Minister Tarek El Molla announced yesterday, Al Borsa reports. No details were provided on the expected investment value. 

El Molla, Shell VP Sami Iskander, and Shell Egypt Managing Director Gasser Hanter also met yesterday discussed drilling new wells in its concessions, Al Masry Al Youm reports, providing little detail. The Shell officials said their company is moving to increase production from its concessions in the Western Desert and in the Mediterranean.

Egyptian Prime Minister, Eng. Sherif Ismail, met with Andrew Brown, Upstream International Director at Shell in the presence of Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek El Molla, and Eng. Gasser Hanter, Country Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell Egypt, to discuss existing and potential opportunities in Egypt’s oil and gas exploration.

The meeting included a report about the company’s work in Egypt and the existing opportunities in gas exploration. Prime Minister confirmed that the Egyptian oil and gas sector is a promising industry with a great future. Additionally, the government is keen to increase the profit of natural minerals and to better manage these resources. The government is also promoting mineral developments to attract further investments.

Royal Dutch Shell is looking to raise natural gas production from its Mediterranean offshore concessions to 1 bcf/d from a current 500 mcf/d in the next few years, Ahram Gate reports, following up on a meeting yesterday between Shell Egypt Chairman and MD Gasser Hanter and Oil Minister Tarek El Molla.

The company reportedly pledged to increase oil production from its Western Desert concessions to 200K bbl/d from a current 130K bbl/d at the same meeting.

Egypt needs to rethink the joint venture model that has governed its onshore oil industry for the past half century as part of wider reforms to the economy, according to James House, senior region vice president for the country's largest international oil producer, Apache.

At a conference in Cairo this week, House told journalists Apache would increase its capital spending in Egypt this year from last year's level, which was around $300 million, as it takes on new concessions and steps up seismic acquisition.

CAIRO, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell has appointed Gasser Hanter to head its Egypt business, the company said on Thursday.

Hanter, who is Egyptian, was named as upstream vice-president and managing director in Egypt. He replaces Aidan Murphy, who has taken on a new role at Shell headquarters.
