Logo-Poseidon Med II POSEIDON MED (PM-I), the first Cross European Border project which aimed to introduce LNG as the main fuel for the shipping industry and develop concepts for an Eastern Mediterranean LNG bunkering infrastructure, has completed this first phase and graduated to POSEIDON MED II (PM-II). The new European project aims to design the legislative and market prerequisites for the use of LNG as a marine fuel, again in the Eastern Mediterranean.
A ceremony held in the European Parliament on 17 February marked the formal conclusion of PM-I and commencement of PM-II. The event brought together Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Member States’ Permanent representatives, delegates from the European Commission, industry participants, as well as the Poseidon Med project partners.
The focus of the event was to bridge the two phases of the project by highlighting the key outcomes of the first phase and presenting the way ahead regarding the use of LNG as marine fuel in the Eastern Mediterranean area.
Through targeted sustainable infrastructure planning, PM-II supports the development of a value-chain and supply network generating demand and contributing to international regulations for a more sustainable maritime sector.
Members of the European Parliament underlined the importance of the potential for gas to fuel a cleaner, better connected future in the Mediterranean, driving maritime technology development and economic opportunities.
POSEIDON MED II, a continuation of “COSTA II–East (Poseidon-Med)” – 2013-EU-21019-S and “Archipelago-LNG” – 2013-EL- 92080-S Projects, is co-financed by the “Connecting Europe Facilities” and will run for the next 5 years. It is a cross border project involving 26 partners from 3 Member States – Greece, Italy and Cyprus – with an ultimate target to make LNG available in 5 core ports; the Greek ports of Piraeus, Patras, Heraklion and Igoumenitsa, and Limassol of Cyprus.
