The first petrol station in Cyprus selling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for gas-fuelled vehicles has opened in Nicosia after securing all the necessary licences.

The petrol station which is owned by oil and gas company Petrolina and carries the Agip brand is located on Larnaca Avenue in Nicosia. According to a statement by Petrolina, it meets all the safety and environmental standards of the EU, complies with Cyprus legislation and the regulations set out by the energy ministry.

“Business moves of this kind offer the consumer alternatives to energy use and contribute to a better quality of life,” Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis commented.

Dinos Lefkaritis, director of Petrolina said the move is part of the company’s strategy to offer innovative products, adding “the company’s objective is to operate other petrol stations with LPG in the near future.”

The political decision to allow the introduction of LPG in road transport was taken in April 2012.

The use of LPG in gas stations was finally sanctioned via ministerial decree back in March 2016.

There have been delays in processing and approving applications which are attributed to bureaucracy and the fact that several government departments must be consulted due to safety concerns.

LPG is an alternative fuel for motorised vehicles. It is more economical than petrol, less harmful to the environment and cheaper.

With current LPG prices, it takes motorists three to four years to recover the cost of converting from petrol to LPG. Diesel cars cannot be converted.

The cost of conversion is estimated at between €1,000 and €1,500. LPG is a blend of propane and butane which can be produced from natural gas or as a by-product of oil refining.
