Siemens is set to add 1,200MW to the national electricity grid by the end of May from power plants in the New Administrative Capital and Borollos.

Sources at the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) said that, according to an agreement with Siemens and Orascom, the New Administrative Capital power plant will add 400MW by the end of March, in addition to 800MW to be added from the Borollos power plant in the end of May.

The sheer capacity spanning Siemens’ three projects in Beni Suef, the New Administrative Capital, and Borollos that will be added before summer amounts to 6,000MW; where 4,800MW have already been linked to the grid pending commercial operation.

The first phases of Egypt’s New Capital and Burullus power plants have been officially inaugurated.

The projects, which are being built by a consortium comprising Siemens, Orascom, and Elsewedy Electric, will be the largest gas-fired combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) upon completion.

The consortium has already succeeded in connecting 2,400MW to Egypt’s national grid through the power plants, exceeding delivery targets by 20%.

Once complete, each power plant will generate a total of 4,800MW.

100 million cubic feet of gas allocated to run Siemens power plants

Chairperson of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) Mohamed El Masry said that Egypt is set to begin exporting natural gas in the second half (H2) of 2019.

He added that Egypt is on track to achieve self-sufficiency through the discovery of the Zohr gas field in the Mediterranean waters.

He pointed out that warning letters have been sent to factories to pay their arrears based on the scheduling scheme approved by the EGAS, especially since part of the arrears have been dropped.

He noted that all factories receive 100% of their gas needs.

Liberation of exchange rate hiked burden to EGP 102bn per year

Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker is currently waiting for the cabinet to decide on one of the scenarios proposed to cope with the increasing financial burden on the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) following the flotation of the Egyptian pound.

Sources at the Ministry of Electricity said that the ministry is considering reducing the proportion of using fuel oil for production, especially as it costs more than gas. The price of fuel oil amounts to EGP 2,500 per tonne, while that of 1 Billion Thermal Units (BTUs) stands at $3bn.

Siemens has energised the first two substations that will transmit electricity generated by the new power plants in Beni Suef and Burullus to Egypt’s power grid

When complete, the plants, which Siemens is building alongside with its partners, will feature a total of six 500/220 kV substations and will enable a reliable and resilient energy delivery for the North African country.

The Etay El-Baroud and Maghagha substations are part of the contract signed between a consortium, comprising Siemens and El Sewedy Electric T&D, with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for the design, engineering, supply and installation of six state-of-the-art substations, located in El Minia, El Beheira, Qalubia, Assiut and Kafr El Zayat governorates. They will include gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), transformers and control and protection equipment. All civil work will be completed by the local-based engineering company El-Sewedy Electric T&D.
