Turkey continues to increase the volume of Russian gas purchases. The trend, which has been observed since the last autumn, continues to gain momentum. According to the latest data, in January-February 2017, Turkey increased Russian's gas imports by 16.6% compared to the same period in 2016.

The expansion of cooperation in the energy sphere was discussed by the Presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the Turkish leader's visit to Moscow in early March. Erdogan said then that the Russian-Turkish energy cooperation is of great importance both in terms of natural gas and in terms of other elements, and in general this process is increasingly developing.

TurkStream necessary for region's natural gas supply

[Alex] Barnes said that Turkey, receiving natural gas from different sources such as Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan, would become a regional hub by putting the necessary rules into practice.

"Natural gas, which will pass through TurkStream, will be needed by Europe since the U.K. and the Netherlands are slowing their natural gas production. In addition, Europe should also increase its use of gas to reduce coal use. If they want to buy Russian gas via Turkey, they will pay and receive it," said Barnes, as he evaluated the second pipeline in the TurkStream natural gas pipeline project.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak said on Sunday that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure that Turkey will not experience gas shortages in winter anymore.

Albayrak stated that Turkey's natural gas consumption was increasing due to the country's development, the proliferation of natural gas and the increase in industrial production. He added that seasonality also played a large role in gas consumption.

Turkey reached a record high on the first Monday of 2016 with 232 million cubic meters of natural gas consumption, which was managed without any problems, the Energy Minister said.

Chairperson of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) Mohamed El Masry said that Egypt is set to begin exporting natural gas in the second half (H2) of 2019.

He added that Egypt is on track to achieve self-sufficiency through the discovery of the Zohr gas field in the Mediterranean waters.

He pointed out that warning letters have been sent to factories to pay their arrears based on the scheduling scheme approved by the EGAS, especially since part of the arrears have been dropped.

He noted that all factories receive 100% of their gas needs.

ANKARA, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Turkey's energy watchdog EPDK imposed a two-month cap of 500 liras per megawatt hour on electricity prices on Friday after prices rose to their highest level in years.

Turkey's daily natural gas consumption has risen to record highs since December, largely due to colder-than-usual weather triggering higher power consumption.

ANKARA, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Turkey's daily natural gas consumption has risen to more than 200 million cubic meters due to increased household demand in cold weather and is outpacing supply, energy industry sources said on Thursday.

To help ease demand, Turkey's state pipeline operator Botas has cut supply to gas-fired power plants by 90 percent and advised several industrial companies to reduce non-critical production, energy sources said.

There are currently no issues in gas flows from foreign supplies such as those from Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan, energy sources said, adding that deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) due in a few days could help meet demand.

Egypt will boost production of natural gas to 5 billion cubic feet per day in the 2017-2018 fiscal year as the giant Zohr field comes online, but will still also ramp up gas imports to feed a spike in consumption, Oil Minister Tarek El Molla said.

Once an energy exporter, Egypt has turned into a net importer in recent years, squeezed by declining production and increasing consumption. The shortfall and squeezed finances have forced the government to ration gas supplies to industry, with some plants unable to operate at full capacity as a result.

Egypt's Oil Ministry is racing to reverse that trend, speeding up the development of major gas discoveries with a stated goal of achieving energy self-sufficiency by 2020-21.
