Cabinet denies giving up stake in Zohr gas field to foreign company - EGYPT TODAY

CAIRO - The Cabinet's media center revealed Sunday that Egypt did not give up its stake in Egypt’s gas field,Zohr,to a foreign company, stressing that all the rumors on social media are baseless.

Zohr is not the only gas field in Egypt; West Nile Delta (WND), Greater Nooros Area, Atoll Phase 1, and WDDM – Burullus Phase 9B are all important gas fields that add to the national gas production.

Egypt’s total gas production came to 6.6 billion scfd in September, compared to 2017’s average of 5.1 billion scfd and 2016’s 4.4 billion scfd, according to the Petroleum Ministry, meaning that between 2018 and 2017, there was a 29.4 percent year-on-year increase.

Italian Oil Company Eni discovered Egypt's giant gas field, Zohr, in 2015. In December 2017, the company delivered the first gas production from the field estimated at 30 trillion cubic feet, which makes it the biggest gas field in the Mediterranean region.

Sector will sign five new deals with investments of $154m

The petroleum sector has achieved numerous developments during the current period in natural gas production. Egypt’s total production of gas reached 5 billion cubic feet per day, following a number of new discoveries. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Wealth Tarek El Molla explains the developments in an interview with Daily News Egypt.

Is the ministry set to sign new petroleum agreements in the coming period?
The Ministry of Petroleum plans to sign five new oil agreements between foreign partners and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) to search for oil and gas in Egypt’s Western Desert, with minimum investments of $154m and signing grants worth $63.2m to drill 30 wells.

The Ministry of Petroleum plans to implement 11 projects to develop gas fields in cooperation with foreign partners. Investments in these projects are expected to total 17.5bn. They aim to offset the natural decay rate in the productivity of fields and increase production rates.

A source at the Ministry of Petroleum told Daily News Egypt that the projects are expected to produce 1.9 billion feet of gas per day and 50,000 barrels of condensate.

The source added that the ministry is in negotiations with foreign partners to speed up the implementation of projects to offset the natural decay rate and to achieve self-sufficiency of gas in Egypt by the end of 2019.

Egypt's production of natural gas is expected to witness a leap in 2017 as pursuant to state's plans for adding production of discovered fields to the national grid, Oil Minister stated Saturday.

Tarek El-Molla said that the first phase of Zohr gas field is set to add more than one billion cubic feet of gas daily before the end of 2017.

The ministry targets covering local market's needs of natural gas through adding the production of the newly-discovered fields to the national grid, the minister clarified.

Speaking about the future of Egyptian petroleum sector, El-Molla added that around 500 million ft3/day of gas would be added to the national grid before the middle of 2017 from North Alexandria filed.

Italian energy company Eni aims to increase the Noras field production to 1bn cubic feet of gas a day at the beginning of 2017, instead of 700m feet in the current year.

A source in the petroleum sector told Daily News Egypt that drilling the development wells showed that Noras’ output will be even more gas than the initially-detected potential production of 700m cubic feet of gas a day.

He explained that 180m cubic feet gas a day from three wells in Noras will be linked to the national gas grid by mid-September, boosting the total output to 700m feet.

The Italian oil company Eni and British BP will target the production of 350m cubic feet per day of gas from the discovery in South Baltim (east of the Nile Delta) by the end of the current fiscal year. The production will be linked to the national grid during the second half of 2017.

A source in the oil sector told Daily News Egypt that the implementation of the first production tests of the well, which was drilled to determine the quantities of natural gas, has been completed to measure the quantities of gas to be produced.

British Petroleum (BP) and Italy’s Eni has estimated the reserves in their concession area in south Baltim at 700bn cubic feet of extractable gas. The gas is in a separate reservoir than the nearby Noras field.

A senior source in the oil industry told Daily News Egypt that the drilling of the first well, Baltim SW 1, has been completed, noting that each well requires a drilling time of two and a half months.

The drilling of the Baltim SW 1 reached a depth of 4,000 metres, which included 25 metres of water.
