Zohr Ramp-Up: Eni start-up the second production unit - ENI

Eni announces the start-up of the second production unit (T-1) of the Zohr project, which will increase installed capacity by 400 MMScfd, just 4 months after the field’s start-up. Zohr now has a capacity of 800 MMscfd, equivalent to 150,000 boe per day (46,000 boed net to Eni).

The production ramp-up is planned to continue, with the same exceptional performance, in order to reach 1.2 bcfd in May 2018, 2 bcfd by end 2018 and the production plateau (2.7 bcfd) in 2019.

The Zohr field, the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea, is located offshore, within the Shorouk Block, some 190 km north of Port Said. Zohr was discovered in August 2015, obtained the Development Lease approval in February 2016, and started the production in December 2017 with a time-to-market of 2.3 years.

BP begins production from Egypt’s Atoll gas field seven months ahead of schedule - BP

BP today announced the start of gas production from the Atoll Phase One project, offshore Egypt. The project, in the North Damietta concession in the East Nile Delta, was delivered seven months ahead of schedule and 33% below the initial cost estimate.

The project is now producing 350 million cubic feet of gas a day (mmscfd) and 10,000 barrels a day (bpd) of condensate. Gas production from the field is directed to Egypt’s national grid.

Atoll is the first new project to come into production for BP in 2018, adding to the series of higher-margin projects successfully brought online over the past few years. The 13 projects that started-up through 2016 and 2017 provided more than 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day (boed) of new net production capacity and total net production from BP’s new projects is now expected to be 900,000 boed by 2021.

Two and a half years ago, analysts asked when Italy’s Eni would be able to start producing gas from the giant Zohr field offshore Egypt. The overwhelming majority said this would happen no earlier than 2019, and most likely after 2021. But first gas from Zohr flowed earlier this month, in the latest sign that the future of the oil and gas industry will be very different from its past.

Big Oil has traditionally taken its time with new projects, especially offshore ones. They require a lot of exploration, a lot of planning, and a lot of equipment once the final investment decision has been made. But no longer: the 2014 crisis really changed the setting, forcing the mammoths of the industry to at least try to become more nimble and flexible.

Zohr will start gas production in December, according to an investor presentation held in Milan today by Eni.

The Zohr discovery, which was made in August 2015, is believed to hold 5.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent, according to Eni’s website. A December production commencement date would mark a 2.3 year timespan from discovery to output start-up.
