Ambitious East Med pipeline plans unveiled in Tel Aviv - IN CYPRUS / CYPRUS WEEKLY

Cyprus, Greece, Israel and Italy on Monday presented their plan for construction of a 1,300-kilometer undersea gas pipeline, the longest in the world.

The energy ministries of Israel, Cyprus, Greece, and Italy have over the past six months been conducting frequent talks with the European Commission DG Energy about exporting gas from Israel to Europe.

Israel, meanwhile, is also understood to still be considering a 500km pipeline agreement with Turkey which will involve passing through Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The visit to Cyprus this coming week by a senior US energy official is an important development and a signal from the US government of its support for the island’s hydrocarbons development, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Sunday.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy, at the Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, Robin Dunnigan is due on the island on Wednesday.

Dunnigan met Christodoulides in Washington last week with whom she discussed the prospects for energy cooperation between the two countries.

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday met with White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem and how to further strengthen US-Cyprus bilateral relations.

Their talks in Washington DC also focused on regional energy issues with Christodoulides telling incyprus.com: “Their (US) intention is to strengthen relations with Cyprus, they consider us a reliable and predictable partner”.

Christodoulides, who departs for Cyprus late on Tuesday, would not say whether a confirmed date for a meeting between US President Donald Trump with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has been set.

Most probably, the high-level talks in the US capital will take place the first week of June.

On Monday, developments in the energy sector with a focus on the activities of US companies in Cyprus` EEZ as well as regional cooperation were discussed during a meeting Christodoulides had with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy Robin Dunnigan.

Technical study for Alexandroupoli LNG unit by this summer - ENERGY PRESS

Technical studies for a floating LNG terminal being planned for Alexandroupoli, northeastern Greece, are expected to be completed by this coming summer.

The prospective project was described as one of pivotal importance for Europe’s energy security and US interests, Robin Dunnigan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy at the US Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, noted yesterday following talks with officials at Gastrade, a Copelouzos corporate group company interested in the LNG unit’s development, as well as Greece’s energy minister Giorgos Stathakis.

The official pointed out that the US’s transformation from natural gas importer to exporter has led to a revision of the country’s outlook on the southeast European region and projects such as the prospective Alexandroupoli facility.
