Investors frustrated by license delays for Crete exploration - ENERGY PRESS

01/March/2019

Contrary to Cyprus, providing oil majors investor-friendly conditions for their hydrocarbon exploration activities, ExxonMobil’s recent Glaucus-1 gas discovery emerging as a shining example, conditions in Greece are undermining the efforts of investors.

A consortium comprising Total, Exxon Mobil and ELPE (Hellenic Petroleum), established for hydrocarbon exploration work off Crete, has been held back by Greek government delays over the past few months.

Though most of the preliminary work has been completed, the trio of investors is still waiting for the Greek government to issue an exploration license, which would enable it to commence work at blocks off Crete.

An environmental impact study provided by the consortium for blocks west and southwest of Crete is said to have inexplicably fallen into stagnancy at one of the offices of the energy ministry’s environmental division over the past couple of months. It needs to be approved as part of the license issuing procedure.

ExxonMobil finds Cyprus’ largest gas discovery to date - IN CYPRUS

February 28, 2019 at 4:15pm

ExxonMobil has discovered natural gas at the Glaucus 1-well in plot 10 of Cyprus’ EEZ  — a find authorities said was the biggest off Cyprus since it started drilling for gas in 2011 and one of the biggest finds worldwide in the past two years.

A gas bearing reservoir discovered during exploratory drilling could potentially represent between 5 and 8 trillion cubic feet of gas, the company and the Cyprus government said.

The announcement was made by Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis and ExxonMobil’s Vice President Europe Russia Caspian and Asia Pacific / Middle East, Tristan Aspray.

“This is the biggest find so far in Cyprus, and based on some official data it is one of the biggest finds worldwide in the past two years,” Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said.  “The results demonstrate the potential of our EEZ because it is a high-quality  reservoir,” he added.

ExxonMobil VP 'very excited' about potential of drilling off Crete - KATHIMERINI

21.12.2018 : 15:18

US energy giant ExxonMobil is set to start looking for natural gas reserves off the coast of western Crete and is optimistic of “future discoveries,” the company's vice president of Exploration for Europe, Russia and the Caspian has said.

“Discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean like Zohr, Leviathan [an Israeli natural gas field] and Aphrodite, are certainly very encouraging for this region, and they certainly suggest to us that there is the potential for future discoveries to be made, and that’s why we’re here exploring,” Tristan Aspray said in an interview with the South EU Summit website on Thursday.

“With respect to Greece, ourselves and Hellenic Petroleum and Total have been awarded – subject to final government approval – two very large licenses offshore southwest and western Crete. We're very excited about the potential of this area. It's a huge area that's never seen a single exploration well and I think there's great potential there,” Aspray said.

ExxonMobil exec says 'happy' to be in Cyprus for gas drilling - KATHIMERINI

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 16:29

ExxonMobil is aware of the particular geopolitical situation in the region of Cyprus, Tristan Aspray, the company’s vice-president for Exploration in Europe, Russia and the Caspian, said during an investment forum hosted by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency at Bloomberg's European headquarters in London on Friday.

Asked about Turkey’s threats towards Cyprus for the planned drilling by an Exxonmobil-led consortium this autumn, Aspray said existing problems are a matter to be resolved by the governments in question.

“We are happy to be in Cyprus,” he said, adding his company is at the final stages of preparation for the two exploratory drills in Block 10, located southwest of the island.

Asked by Greek broadcaster SKAI when drills will start, he reiterated that they are planned for the last quarter of the year, but didn’t provide a specific date.

Turkey has repeatedly warned it would stop international oil companies from drilling for gas in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone, claiming it should receive a share of any potentially lucrative findings.
