-Τι μέλλει γενέσθαι με την εμπορική συνεργασία Κύπρου – Αιγύπτου και ενδεχόμενη συνεργασία Ισραήλ – Αιγύπτου;

-Ενδεχόμενο «ναυάγιο» - τι επιπτώσεις θα επιφέρει στην ανάπτυξη των υπό μελέτη θαλάσσιων υποδομών από το κοίτασμα Αφροδίτη προς την Αίγυπτο;

-Ποιες οι επιπτώσεις στην διοχέτευση ΦΑ στην εσωτερική αγορά της Κύπρου;

Egypt says Zohr gas find will not undermine talks on imports from Israel | The Cairo Post

Egypt says Zohr gas find will not undermine talks on imports from Israel

The Cairo Post, Sep. 02, 2015 15:24

Egypt says Zohr gas find will not undermine talks on imports from Israel
Minister Of Petroleum Sherif Ismail - YOUM7 (Archive)
By
CAIRO: The discovery of the Zohr natural gas field off Egypt will not undermine private-sector negotiations about buying gas from Israel,
Egypt‘s petroleum minister said, playing down fears that potential deals could be under threat.
Italian energy company Eni announced on Sunday that it had found an estimated 30 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas in the Zohr field, making it the biggest discovery in the Mediterranean and the world’s 20th largest.
The find raised concerns in Israel’s gas industry that its Leviathan field would lose a deal to supply gas to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Egypt.
“Any negotiations between private companies in Egypt and in the eastern Mediterranean, and by this I mean Israel and Cyprus, will not stop,” Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail told Reuters in an interview.
“These negotiations and initial agreements are ongoing.”
Private companies will require government approval to import gas from Israel, the minister said.
Ismail’s comments may improve sentiment on the Israeli stock market where leading energy companies on Monday suffered losses of more than 4.5 billion shekels ($1.1 billion) after news of the Zohr discovery.
Despite the minister’s comments, Western oil companies operating in Egypt negotiating gas import deals with Israeli counterparts will have to decide for themselves whether recent finds in Egypt alter the equation.
“We do not object to the plans of private companies (which are) operating in Egypt and looking to import natural gas from eastern Mediterranean countries,” the minister said.
For Egypt, the Zohr field offers hope in the country’s battle with chronic, politically sensitive energy shortages.
Egypt used to export gas to Israel and elsewhere but has become a net importer over the last few years because of booming consumption and depleted natural gas output.
State-owned EGAS has been forced to ration gas supplies to industry, crippling production and hamperingEgypt‘s economic recovery.
Blackouts deepened discontent with Islamist President Mohamed Mursi before the army toppled him in 2013.
Gas produced from the Zohr field will flow to Egypt, including Eni’s share, Ismail said, suggesting Cairo has no export plans from Zohr.
Eni will hold a 35 percent share of Zohr’s reserves, with the rest claimed by the state, the Ministry of Petroleum said this week.
“The priority is for the domestic market,” Ismail said.
Around 75 percent of the 30 tcf of gas in the new field is likely recoverable given it’s “good quality” and this would bring Egypt‘s total natural gas reserves to an estimated 90 tcf, the minister said.
Once developed it is expected to produce between 2.5 and 3 billion cubic feet of gas per day, Ismail said.
Eni is expected to deliver a development plan by the end of October detailing the number of wells it will dig, and production will likely begin at the start of 2018, the minister said.
Analysts say this timeline is ambitious and that at least in the short run Egypt may still look to Israel’s Leviathan to fill its natural gas needs.
The price paid to Eni to purchase the field’s gas for domestic use is still under negotiation.
“We have not yet agreed with Eni over the price of the gas …but the important thing is it’s a number appropriate for both parties …It’s not a condition that it be the same number agreed upon in other deals,” the minister said.
In July, Egypt raised the prices it pays Eni and Edison for the gas they produce in the country, a move intended to encourage needed investment in energy.
The petroleum minister said previously that Egypt is looking to be energy self sufficient by 2020. The newest discovery does not mean this will be achieved any sooner, he said.
When asked about the prospect of exporting gas in the future, the minister said: “We have to be realistic…we need to cover the needs of the domestic market in full.”
The prospect of relaunching exports depends on other discoveries and production levels from other, smaller fields expected to come online in the next few years, he said.
The Zohr discovery also makes it more likely that LNG plants which have suspended operations in recent years return to service.
“Of course the LNG plants will go back to operating in the coming period, as we have a plan to exploit the gas surpluses of Mediterraneanbasin countries for use at these plants,” the minister said, adding he hopes to make Egypt a global gas hub.
“It’s very likely that the new discovery will attract new international companies to work in the area,” he said.

Eni's giant discovery to transform Egypt's gas outlook | Wood Mackenzie

Eni's giant discovery to transform Egypt's gas outlook

We assess the potential impact of the find and whether the development could meet the country's supply shortfall.
Eni recently announced a giant discovery at its Zohr prospect in offshore Egypt. Estimated to hold 30 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of lean gas , it is one of the most significant global finds of the past decade.
For Egypt, Zohr's importance is enormous. Following a decade of little exploration success and a slowdown in investment, the country began importingLNG in April to meet growing domestic demand.
Egyptian gas supply chart
We expect LNG imports to reach close to 6 mmtpa next year. However, an additional 2.5-3 bcf/d of gas from Zohr - over 60% of Egypt's current indigenous supply - will negate the need for long-term imports, with the country entering a period of energy self-sufficiency.
A moratorium on exports from new discoveries has long been in place and we expect all Zohr gas to supply the domestic market. However, depending on the future policies of the state-owned Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), it may free up upstream producers with cancelled gas sales agreements to resume exports via the 1.6 bcf/d of idle LNG export capacity.
Explorers will also be heartened by the discovery. EGAS will have learned from the 'gas glut' of the nineties and better stewardship will ensure the continuing prioritisation of the domestic market, while encouraging the development of other finds.
Longer term, Zohr will provide the government some breathing space as it liberalises the gas sector. But, in the short-term, it could delay the development of costlier, high pressure developments and reduce pricing that operators might otherwise have secured from EGAS.
Nevertheless, Egypt's upstream sector is continuing to enjoy a renaissance in 2015 and Zohr looks set to be the crown in a remarkable transformation of fortunes.

Eni's Egypt gas find limits Israel's export options | Globes

Globes, 01/09/2015, 16:41, Hedy Cohen

Experts tell "Globes" that the chances of Leviathan exports to Egypt are slim and suggest Turkey as an alternative.

"The Egyptian discovery changes the entire energy picture in the Middle East;" "Exports from Leviathan to Egypt are no longer possible, but they are still possible from Tamar;" "Exports from Tamar are off the agenda;" "The gas outline agreement must be completely rewritten;" "The gas outline agreement must be implemented as quickly as possible," these are just some of the reactions from Israel's politicians and businesspeople after Italian energy company Eni announced two days ago that it had found a "supergiant" gas field 190 kilometers off the coast of Egypt.

Cyprus Link to ENI Zohr Discovery

31 Aug 2015

The hydrocarbon bearing intervals of the recent ENI Zohr discovery on Egypt’s Mediterranean Shorouk license probably extend into neighboring Cyprus.

On 30 August, ENI announced the largest gas discovery in the Mediterranean on its Zohr Prospect offshore Egypt. An estimated potential of 30 trillion cubic feet of lean gas is reported to be in place, with a  target interval in sub-salt Miocene carbonates, and a possible additional play in the deeper Cretaceous sequence.
Zohr lies just a few kilometers south of the Cypriot border, raising the possibility that the hydrocarbon bearing intervals extend into the Cypriot Block 11 license.
The PGS 3D MultiClient survey CYP2013 covers most of Cyprus Block 11, including the area adjacent to the border with Egypt.
CYP2013 images the same gas bearing intervals that are present in the Zohr prospect, and the data indicates structural closures in the relevant intervals on the Cypriot side of the border. Other prospective reservoir intervals on this dataset are analogous to Levantine Basin discoveries (Aphrodite, Leviathan, Tamar).
The CYP2013 data is available for licensing from PGS. Contact us if you would like to explore Cyprus.

The giant Zohr discovery is located close to the Egypt-Cyprus border raising the possibility that the hydrocarbon bearing intervals extend into the Cypriot Block 11 license.

Eni ‘supergiant’ gas field discovery a gamechanger: CEO | CNBC

Eni ‘supergiant’ gas field discovery a gamechanger: CEO

31/August/2015

TEKMOR note: Egypt's Zohr field is just 3 nautical miles away from Cyprus' plot 11

Eni's discovery of potentially the world's largest natural-gas field off the Egyptian coast will be a gamechanger for Egypt and the Mediterranean in terms of energy stability, the CEO of the Italian energy giant told CNBC on Monday.
On Sunday, Eni said in a press release that it had discovered a "supergiant" gas field that could hold "a potential of 30 trillion cubic feet of lean gas in place." It said the discovery well was located off Egypt's Mediterranean coastline at a depth of 1,450 metres with the prospective Zohr field covering an area of about 100 square kilometres (60 square miles).
Eni said that the discovery could satisfy Egypt's natural gas demand for "decades".
On Monday, Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, told CNBC: "It is changing the game for Egypt…It is very important for Egypt, but also for the Mediterranean in terms of stability."
Descalzi could not give a timeline for when the gas might hit the market, but said developments would be quick as the gas field was in close proximity to Eni's processing facilities.
"It is close to the facilities so the time to market will be very good… that is part of our strategy to…continue to do our exploration in the mature area where we have a deep geographical knowledge and we can take advantage of our facilities and that will make the unit cost in terms of capital very positive," the CEO said.
"I don't want to put a date now but it is a question of a few years to have production—then a full production, that will be a very quick fast track development," Descalzi added.

Energy price concern?

State-backed Eni has market capitalization of around 54 billion euros ($61 billion) and is the biggest foreign producer in Africa. It has operated in Egypt for more than 60 years through its Egyptian subsidiary IEOC and is one of the main energy producers in the country, with a daily output of 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent.

In June, it signed an energy exploration deal with Egypt's oil ministry worth $2 billion following an memorandum of understanding signed in March during an investment conference, allowing the Italian major to explore in Sinai, the Gulf of Suez, the Mediterranean and areas in the Nile Delta.
Eni operating in what is a tough environment for energy companies with a low and volatile oil price. Earlier this year, the Italian firm cut its dividend and said it would cut investments by 17 percent in the 2015 to 2018 period.
However, Descalzi expressed confidence on Monday in response to questions about the commodity price slide and Iran coming back to the markets.
"This type of discovery…is another positive response to this kind of low price environment," the CEO told CNBC.
"Gas has a big future because of the environmental constraints. The new environmental targets for emission will give gas more power because renewable with gas will be the future in terms of the sustainability of our energy system. I'm very positive on the gas market," he added.

‘Supergiant’ gas field discovered off Egypt

Eni said the discovery - made in its Zohr prospect ‘in the deep waters of Egypt.’ (File: Reuters)
The Italian energy company Eni SpA announced Sunday it has discovered a “supergiant” natural gas field off Egypt, describing it as the “largest-ever” found in the Mediterranean Sea.

The news came a day after Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the Egyptian leader’s office said.

Eni said the discovery - made in its Zohr prospect “in the deep waters of Egypt” - could hold a potential 30 trillion cubic feet of gas over an area of 100 square kilometers (38.6 square miles).

“Zohr is the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea and could become one of the world’s largest natural gas finds,” Eni said in a statement. “The discovery, after its full development, will be able to ensure satisfying Egypt’s natural gas demand for decades.”

Descalzi was quoted by Eni as saying that the discovery reconfirms that “Egypt still has great potential” energy-wise. He said “important synergies with the existing infrastructures can be exploited, allowing us a fast production startup.”

Eni has been in Egypt since 1954 through its subsidiary IEOC. It’s the main hydrocarbon producer in Egypt, with a daily equity production of 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent, the company said.

Italy’s Eni announces huge gas find off Egypt’s coast | Jerusalem Post

Italy’s Eni announces huge gas find off Egypt’s coast

Italian energy group Eni said on Sunday it had discovered the largest known gas field in the Mediterranean off the Egyptian coast, predicting the find could help meet Egypt’s gas needs for decades to come.

The offshore “Zohr” field could hold 30 trillion cubic feet (849 billion cubic meters) of gas, covering an area of about 100 square kilometers, according to a statement from the Italian firm. If the estimates are correct, the Zohr gas field would be significantly larger than Israel’s biggest field Leviathan, which is approximately 621 b.cu.m.

“Zohr is the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and in the Mediterranean Sea and could become one of the world’s largest natural-gas finds,” the statement from Eni said, adding that the company had full concession rights to the area.

The find follows other significant gas discoveries in the Mediterranean in recent years, including in Israel. This is expected to have a major impact on the region’s economy and potentially offer Europe new supply options, allowing it to lessen its dependence on Russian gas imports.

In response to Eni’s announcement, National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Minister Yuval Steinitz stressed the need to urgently approve Israel’s natural gas compromise outline, to end the freeze that has overtaken the sector at home. Although the cabinet approved the document in question two weeks ago, numerous bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles are still preventing the outline from receiving final authorization. As a result, development has yet to begin on Israel’s Leviathan gas reservoir. “Following the reports, the discovery of the huge gas field in Egypt is a painful reminder that while the State of Israel is standing still and taking its time with the final approval of the gas outline, and delaying further exploration, the world is changing before our eyes, also with ramifications on export possibilities,” Steinitz said. “We must approve the gas outline and advance the Israeli gas sector.”

Some such export opportunities involved potentially conveying gas from Israel to Egypt. Last year, the natural gas companies operating in Israel’s waters signed letters of intent for the provision of 71 b.cu.m. of Tamar reservoir gas to Spanish Union Fenosa’s Egyptian liquefied natural gas plant and the supply of 105 b.cu.m. of Leviathan gas to the British Gas LNG plant, also in Egypt.

While Steinitz reacted with urgency regarding to the Eni’s announcement about the Egyptian gas field, MK Shelly Yacimovich (Zionist Union), who has been particularly vocal against Israel’s gas companies and the government’s actions, said that the discoveries prove that advancing Israel’s gas outline is not an issue of national security. “It turns out that Egypt does not need our gas, and the government must now require the creation of a logical and sane outline, without fictitious panic and imaginary security explanations,” Yacimovich said. Although some Israeli officials may view the likely discovery at Zohr as a threat to Israel, the finds represent a major boost for Egypt, where power cuts caused by gas and oil shortages have often fueled unrest.

Eni said the discovery was located at a depth of 1,450 meters, adding that it planned to fast track development of the site, using existing infrastructure. It said yet more gas might be uncovered in future drilling.

Eni, 30 percent controlled by the Italian state, is the biggest foreign oil and gas producer in Africa, where it has significant operations in war-riven Libya. In 2011 it made huge finds in offshore Mozambique, with an estimated 85 trillion cubic feet of gas in place.

It has operated for more than 60 years in Egypt and is one of the main energy producers in the country, with a daily output of 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent.

In June, it signed an energy exploration deal with Egypt worth $2 billion, allowing Eni to explore in Sinai, the Gulf of Suez, the Mediterranean and areas in the Nile Delta.

In July, Egypt raised the prices it pays Eni for the natural gas it produces.

“This historic discovery will be able to transform the energy scenario of Egypt,” said Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi, who met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday to discuss the find.

Egypt, which once exported gas to Israel and elsewhere, has become a net energy importer over the last few years.

Under Sisi, Egypt’s state-owned gas company EGAS has increasingly rationed gas supplies to much of the domestic industry, which has at times crippled production and hampered the economic recovery.

The government has also attempted to improve the energy situation by slashing state energy subsidies, paying down its debt to foreign energy firms, and negotiating import agreements.
