ADCO Enhanced Oil Recovery

CSS Projects WorldWide
The UAE is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol which calls for commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and therefore mitigate their impact on climate change.

ADCO in its strive to be an active participant in implementing the National aspiration, has therefore created a specialized department named Carbon Management Department, within the Technical Support Division, to achieve this objective. Success of utilization of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in ADCO reservoirs will achieve two major objectives:

Increase ADCO's oil reserves significantly while sustaining long term production
Preserve the hydrocarbon gases currently used for gas injection

The 'Carbon Management' department is also responsible for managing the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) schemes of ADCO.

What is CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery ?

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is recovery of Oil using means other than natural depletion or secondary methods(eg. water-flooding).
EOR can obtain significant reserves by mobilizing additional oil that would have been left as residual oil in reservoir rocks.

ADCO implemented the first CO2 injection pilot in the Middle East in Rumaitha (North-East Bab Field) field. Injection of CO2, supplied by Masdar, was begun in November, 2009.

Masdar will embark on major Carbon Capture projects from the Abu Dhabi Power plants and other energy intensive plants e.g. Steel, Aluminum etc. and will create an infra-structure of pipelines to supply Abu Dhabi reservoirs with required CO2 volumes.

ADCO has therefore paved the way for implementations of the technology in other ADNOC OPCOs and in the region.

To implement the ADCO EOR projects a road map has been formulated to define the process

A technical screening study to identify potential candidates was conducted. Laboratory Fluid and Rock core studies have been carried out to understand the impact of injection of Carbon Dioxide in the ADCO reservoirs. Computer simulation studies are also being conducted to study the oil recovery process. Studies to understand impact of Carbon Dioxide on surface facilities and to evaluate the economics of launching the projects are ongoing

Success of the CO2-EOR projects will benefit the UAE economically and environmentally and ADCO is proud to be contributing to this National aspiration.
