Two European co-funded projects Cynergy and Cyprus Gas2EU, organised a Discussion Forum with the title “Natural Gas: Cyprus Heading towards a New Energy Era” at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia. The event was under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, and attracted more than 160 delegates from the transport and energy sectors, public bodies, and international organisations. The first official presentation of the CYnergy video was also held during the event.
In his welcome speech, Mr. Lakkotrypis emphasized on the importance of CYnergy, as being an extremely important project for Cyprus, since it sets the foundations for importing LNG and thus contributes to the island’s energy security and the roll-out of gas market. He also added that CyprusGas2EU is a project of particular national importance, as it will help Cyprus to finally wean itself off conventional fossil fuels for electricity production, which currently account for approximately 90 per cent.
Transport Minister Vassiliki Anastassiadou, in her welcome speech, equally pointed out that natural gas in liquefied or compressed form is a possible solution for minimizing dependence on fossil fuels and for reducing the environmental impact of the transport sector. She noted that through these natural gas infrastructure, Cyprus could exploit its geopolitical position to lead the Mediterranean in LNG bunkering services.
Following Ministers’ welcome speeches, the press addressed questions to the Permanent Secretary of Energy Ministry, Dr. Stelios Himonas, the CΥnergy Project Manager and Managing Director of Ocean Finance, Dr. Panayiotis Zacharioudakis, and the Non-Executive Chairman of DEFA, Dr. Symeon Kassianides, about the strategy towards the use of natural gas in transport and energy sectors in Cyprus. While, the steps towards placing Cyprus at the forefront of the new energy era, were discussed by Dr. Helmut Morsi, European Commission Adviser and Coordinator for DG-MOVE in his keynote speech.
The event closed with two highly interesting forum discussions dedicated to all topics related to bringing and using natural gas in Cyprus. Panellists representing key partners of Cynergy and CyprusGas2EU projects, discussed about the technical solutions, safety and safe operation of the natural gas infrastructure, the provisions of the International and European legislative framework to be adopted by the legislative framework of Cyprus, the environmental benefits deriving from the use of natural gas by energy and transport, the issues related to infrastructure licensing, the economics of natural gas and the incentives for its use, as well as Greece’s best practice.
CYnergy in a few words
CYnergy aims to develop specific implementation plans for the use of NG by road transport, industrial and commercial users and the maritime sector in Cyprus. The key is the development of a sustainable and fully functional NG market for providing clean and affordable energy to the end user. The project, which is co-financed by the EU, is a collaboration of energy, transport and finance experts as well as public and governmental institutions of Cyprus and Greece.

CyprusGas2EU in a few words
CyprusGas2EU will end Cyprus’ current energy isolation by bringing diversification to a region mostly dominated by one single source of supply and help reduce air pollution and emissions by allowing switching from heavy fuel oil to natural gas. The project, which is co-financed by the EU, focuses on enabling gas import to Cyprus through an FSRU, as well as constructing all necessary infrastructure for permanently berthing and mooring the FSRU in Vassiliko and supplying natural gas to the adjacent power station.
