This is the year for delivering energy union and Cyprus can play an important regional role, EU Vice President and Commissioner for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic said.
“We need a better energy community, we need to look at energy in a different way,” Sefcovic told a press conference in Nicosia on Tuesday at the end of his two-day working visit.
“We see the eastern Mediterranean as a very important territory from the point of view of the energy security of Europe…we will work very closely with Cyprus so as to develop it in the most intelligent way to the benefit of the region but also of Europe.”
Sefcovic commended Cyprus’ dedication to enhancing renewable energy and ensuring that energy efficiency targets for 2020 will be met.
And he sent the message that it is now more than feasible for sunny countries like Cyprus and for Europe in general to develop into a leader in sun and wind sources.
“We must look into new solutions and innovations, we must explore and promote smart financing for smart buildings,” he added.
In Nicosia, Sefcovic met President Nicos Anastasiades, Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and with members of the standing Committees on Energy, Trade, Industry, Tourism and European Affairs.
He also held a Citizens’ dialogue on Energy Union at the University of Cyprus, visited Vassilikos Power Station and met with stakeholders from the energy sector.
